Premium brand cars rank among the least dependable motors on the market, a new survey has revealed.

The Land Rover and Alfa Romeo have come in the bottom of the table for reliability and customer satisfaction, according to the Which? annual car survey.

Based on feedback of nearly 60,000 UK car owners and their experience of breakdowns, repair costs, how many days off the road the car was owing to faults, and the most common fault, Saab came bottom while Lexus came top.

Here are the top five:

  • Lexus – 5*
  • Toyota – 4*
  • Honda – 4*
  • Dacia – 4*
  • Suzuki – 4*

Here are the bottom five:

  • Alfa Romeo – 2*
  • Land Rover – 2*
  • Smart – 2*
  • Chevrolet – 2*
  • Saab – 2*.

Romanian budget car Dacia (the Sandero model garnered a 4* reliability rating and is the UK’s cheapest new car costing £5,995) also rated highly on satisfaction, with the manufacturer achieving an overall score of 90%, comparable with premium brands such as Tesla, Porsche and Jaguar.

Richard Headland, editor of Which? magazine, said: “Our survey, the biggest of its kind in the UK, reveals that spending more on a car is no guarantee of reliability, and sometimes quite the opposite.

“The ultra-cheap Dacia Sandero shows that a reliable run-around need not break the bank, while some pricey Land Rover models could put you on first-name terms with your local mechanic.”
