Centrica, owner of British Gas, plans to raise gas bills by 12.4% for its 10.7 million customers in the next few months.
This will be supplemented by a 9.4% rise in its electricity prices for 5.8 million customers, a situation blamed by the company on “unprecedented high wholesale energy costs”.
“The rises are absolutely scandalous and will cause great financial difficulty for the low paid and those like State pensioners who are already struggling to pay their bills,” said utilities expert Paul Grainger.
“British Gas lost £143m in the first six months of the year and if I were a shareholder I’d be wondering what on earth is going on at senior management level,” he added.
