Flights to popular destinations are up to 41% cheaper on Friday 13 – considered the unluckiest day of the year – research from a travel search engine reveals.

Kayak analysis shows that on average, flights departing today are 14% cheaper than when travelling on the same routes any other day in May.

This is despite the fact that Friday is generally one of the most expensive days to travel.

According to its data, the biggest savings can be scored on flights departing from the UK to Copenhagen, which were shown to be 41% cheaper on average.

Sun-seeking Brits can also expect large savings on flights to popular southern European destinations departing today: Malaga (17%), Venice (15%), Rome (14%), Lisbon (13%) and Madrid (11%).

However, there’s only one Friday 13th falling in 2016 – compared with three in 2015 – this could prove to be the best day of the year for Brits to bag a great deal on flights to their dream destination.

Loella Pehrsson, Kayak’s regional director UK, Ireland & the Nordics, said: “Flight prices are, of course, based on demand, so the data indicates that Brits really are superstitious enough that they would prefer not to fly on Friday 13.

“Flying on Friday 13 is of course, just as safe as flying on any other day of the year, so if you are flexible and keen to bag a bargain, it’s an ideal time to fly. Most airlines even facilitate any superstitious fliers by not having an aisle 13 on their aircrafts.”
