Asda sparked another petrol price war after announcing it is slashing pump prices by up to 2p per litre, just over a week after cutting 3p per litre to the relief of drivers.

Asda this morning announced it will cut up to 2p per litre off unleaded and up to 1p per litre off diesel.

As it operates a national fuel price cap, drivers filling up at any of its 318 forecourts will pay no more than 122.7p per litre on unleaded and 126.7p per litre on diesel from today.

The move comes after it last week sparked a petrol price war with the other supermarkets by cutting up to 3p per litre off pump prices.

And, just like last week, Sainsbury’s was quick to follow suit. From tomorrow, unleaded will fall by up to 2p per litre while diesel will be cut by up to 1p per litre across its 311 filling stations. Further, drivers will be able to collect Nectar points on the transaction, gaining one point per litre of fuel bought.

Morrisons came next in line as it too announced that from tomorrow, it would cut the price of unleaded by up to 2p a litre and diesel by up to 1p a litre at its 334 forecourts across the UK to “pass on savings resulting from falling oil prices”.

To complete the set, Tesco will cut up to 2p per litre off petrol and 1p on diesel from this evening.

Senior fuel buyer at Asda, Dave Tyrer, said: “Once again, we are leading the market in reducing fuel prices for hard pressed families. We know that transport costs put the most pressure on household incomes, so we will always do whatever we can to reduce that burden.

“We were the first supermarket to lower pump prices last week and further decreases in the wholesale market mean we are able to reduce our prices further. This means we’ve dropped prices by up to 5ppl on unleaded and up to 3ppl on diesel in just over a week.”
