BMW is to recall 312,000 older models following concerns the engine could cut out while being driven.

The car maker initially recalled 36,000 petrol cars last year but it has now extended this to the following petrol and diesel models built between March 2007 and September 2011:

  • 1 Series
  • 3 Series
  • Z4
  • X1

It comes after a motorist was killed on Christmas Day in 2016 when he swerved into a tree to avoid a BMW that had broken down as a result of the issue.

The problem rests with a plug on the B+ battery connector. BMW explained that vibrations can potentially cause frictional corrosion on the plug of the power distributor. Affected cars may see a drop in engine power. An improved plug prevents the problem.

The German manufacturer said it will now be contacting all affected customers by post advising people how they can book their car in to have the work carried out.

A spokesperson, said: “We will commence contacting affected customers in the next three weeks.

“The work should take no more than two hours. There will be no cost to the customer.”

If you haven’t heard from BMW within three weeks, the contact number is 0800 083 4397.
