BNY Mellon has produced a free ‘Guide to Investing for Women’ to provide an introduction to investing and looking at some of the practical considerations.

The group cited a recent YouGov survey, which found 74% of women were concerned about their financial future, compared with 46% with the same concerns in 2010. BNY Mellon said that the shift in women’s attitude to investment and their role within society is highlighted by their investment style:

Women have different priorities, considerations and approaches than men. Woman are generally less financially confident than men and do not feel prepared to make financial decisions but this does not mean they are necessarily more risk adverse.

Commenting on the guide, Samantha Hurditch at BNY Mellon says “I believe that planning for your financial future is an important consideration regardless of gender. What is specific to woman is their changing role in society. There are now 2.2m working mothers who are the primary breadwinners for example, fewer women are marrying and divorce is more prevalent today than in previous generations. Combine this with a challenging economic backdrop and there are profound changes taking place in women’s attitudes, not least towards money and financial planning”.

Hurditch adds; “Recent research shows that women have a similar wide range of financial needs and aspirations to men but that they are quite different in how they approach financial matters – the research shows that women particularly dislike being ‘sold’ to; instead, they prefer to understand their own needs and the options open to them. They can then, in turn, feel more confident about taking the important decisions that can affect their financial futures, or to discuss these with advisers without feeling pressured. Finance doesn’t have to be complicated – there’s a lot of jargon used in the financial industry which can be off-putting and our guide had been written to provide a comprehensive introduction to investing.”
