Customers ‘unfairly ambushed’ by heavy energy bills
30th June 2006 by Richard Lee
Gas and electricity customers are being ‘ambushed’ by huge quarterly bills showing they are deep in debt to their energy suppliers. Many have expressed anger that they were not informed that the shortfalls were building up.
Energywatch, the independent watchdog, said the problems were occurring because some suppliers were not adjusting direct debit payments to take account of big price increases.
“This is typical of the money-grabbing utility companies and shows their complete disregard for their customers’ needs,” said energy analyst Mick Sharpe. “I wish they were regulated in the way mortgage brokers are, for example.
“At least there might be some fairness then.”
