If you signed up to the online movie streaming service Netflix before May 2014, brace yourself for a price rise unless you’re happy to stick with its basic package.

Netflix users who signed up to the service before May 2014 could soon see their monthly bills increase from £5.99 as a two-year grace period comes to an end next month.

The streaming service increased its prices for new users from May 2014 to £6.99 but promised to keep existing customers on the lower price for two years as a ‘thank you’ for their custom.

Netflix, which shows popular series and films such as House of Cards, Orange is The New Black, Breaking Bad and Making a Murderer, also introduced two further packages at the time of the price rise announcement – a basic and premium package.

As part of it ending the ‘grandfathering’ scheme which fixed the prices for past members once they come up to the end of their May bill cycle, they can choose one of the following options:

  • Basic: £5.99 which allows you to view unlimited films and TV programmes on your laptop, TV, phone and tablet.
  • Standard: £7.49 which allows you to view in HD, unlimited films and TV programmes and on two screens at the same time.
  • Premium: £8.99 which allows you all of the above but on up to four different screens.

Netflix added that if customers don’t select a new package, they’ll be enrolled on to the standard package – a £1.50 rise.

In January Netflix had over 75 million customers but it was unable to comment on how many customers are on the old ‘grandfathering’ price package.

It confirmed there are no price changes for new customers.
