Almost a quarter of over 55s – or 4.2 million people – have no will, according to research from insurer SunLife.

That means around 128,000 people aged over 55 could have died without leaving a will last year, meaning they had no control over how their assets were divided after their death.

According to Citizens Advice, the number of people who have died without making a will has more than doubled in the last five years.

An up-to-date will makes sure your wishes are respected and can avoid difficult decisions and legal complications for your loved ones.

The SunLife research coincides with Free Wills Month, which offers over 55s the opportunity to have their will written or updated free of charge by a solicitor. Go to freewillsmonth.org.uk for more information.

Graham Jones, director at Sunlife, said: “Death is such a taboo subject. People do not like talking about it, and as a result, they are not planning for it. But without a will, you have no say in how your assets are shared.”
