Pre-tax profits at British Airways increased by 8% to £164m on increased sales of £2.13bn in the final three months of 2005, as a result of “significant promotional activity”.

Operating profit was £175m in the three months ending 31st December, and nine-month profits were £529m.

“These are encouraging results which reflect better revenue and the continued efforts of our people to strengthen the business,” said Willie Walsh, BA’s chief executive.

“The numbers are good and there’s been a significant turnaround at BA in recent years,” said aviation expert Barry Long.

“The company undertook a lot of cost-cutting a while ago and this seems to be paying off.”
