The pound has risen to a 12-month high against the US dollar on a wave of strong data on the UK economy.

The news that, in April, house price inflation had reached a 13 month high and mortgage lending reached a level not seen for two and a half years, helped push sterling up by three-quarters of a cent, to $1.8488.
