Big High Street retailers have had their proposal for extended Sunday shopping hours blocked by the Government.
Officials said the proposal was quashed as, despite a vocal lobby led by ASDA, B&Q and IKEA, they could not find consensus among all retailers, making reform of the current legislation very difficult.
Pro-reform lobbyists claim that extended Sunday opening hours would benefit the economy by £1.4bn a year, and create thousands of jobs.
Trade secretary Alistair Darling is expected to outline the Government’s position on Thursday.
