Virgin Media has launched an app that will help customers cut the cost of their mobile phone bills by using inclusive minutes from their home phone talk plan.

The SmartCall app enables smartphone users to use their inclusive home phone calls over WiFi regardless of where they are in the world and which mobile operator they use.

The app detects whether a SmartCall is possible and if the call is included in the user’s home phone talk plan.

When used abroad the app will detect which time zone the customer is in and whether it is still free to make a call within the call plan.

The app only works over a WiFi connection and not over 3G or 4G, and customers can only make a SmartCall when it is free so there should be no surprise bills.

Virgin Media says SmartCall can be used to call landlines, mobiles, 0845/70 numbers, directory enquiries, and when roaming.

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at uSwitch.com, said: “SmartCall is genuinely innovative – and for some consumers it could be well worth the wait. Not only will it share the perks of home phone bundles with your mobile in the form of free minutes, but thousands of smartphone users could also avoid being burnt for using their phone abroad.

“The app, which will allow smartphone users to phone the UK from any wi-fi hotspot in the world for free, could help holidaymakers to avoid often horrendous roaming charges and lead to the end of bill shock.

“And for those Virgin Media customers who enjoy unlimited calls as part of their home phone package, the monthly savings could be substantial. Tapping into your landline call allowance from your mobile will mean that those free minutes won’t go to waste simply because you’re not at home to make the most of them. It’s a smart move from Virgin that you don’t have to be a mobile customer to benefit from this.”
