A new insurance policy has been launched which will help young motorists improve their driving skills while lowering their insurance premiums.

woop young driver insurance is a usage-based telematics policy that makes premiums more affordable for motorists aged 17 to 24, without imposing curfews or mileage limits.

Telelmatics insurance policies – also known as black box policies – offer personalised insurance based on how the motorist on the policy is driving.

The woop app is powered by Tom Tom technology and provides policyholders with feedback on their driving performance through woop’s website and smartphone app.

Using the data collected from the app, woop then provides drivers with feedback on all aspects of their driving style, from speed and acceleration to harsh steering and braking.

The app, known as the woop buddy, can also provide accident reporting and allows the policyholder’s vehicle to be tracked in the event of theft.

This feedback then empowers drivers to improve their skills and safer driving is rewarded by lower renewal costs.

David Hayward, managing director of woop cover, said: “More than half a million drivers aged 17 to 24 pass their test each year but around one in five will have a crash within six months, causing the price of insurance to rocket.

“woop young driver insurance aims to provide a solution to both problems, making premiums affordable, while taking an innovative approach to improving safety on Britain’s roads.”

Thomas Schmidt, managing director of TomTom Business Solutions, said: “Motorists have seen a continual rise in the cost of running a car during recent years, so TomTom is happy to be part of any scheme which works to reverse this trend and support motorists, particularly young drivers.

“Our technology adds real value by providing clear information and data – in turn helping to improve safety and reduce insurance premiums for young drivers.”
