Tesco has launched a new scheme allowing Clubcard holders to save 2p a litre on fuel for every £50 spent in-store or online.

Touted by the supermarket chain as the first programme of its kind in the UK, the Clubcard Fuel Save scheme is capped at a per-litre discount of 20p.

Pete Williams of the RAC said: “This promotion breaks the mould of one-off supermarket fuel discounts based on spending over a certain amount in store. When you consider the average family shopping bill is £323 a month, the 2p a litre discount for every £50 spent could mean some households save 12p a litre on a fill-up each month.”

Each time a Clubcard holder makes a purchase they earn credit, receiving their 2p per litre discount whenever they reach £50. The discount is cumulative and can be used immediately or saved up and redeemed by the end of the following calendar month.

When the programme was trialed in Wales, more than 70% of participants said it would make a major difference in their household budgets.

Chris Bush, UK managing director of Tesco, said: “Petrol prices are forcing families to make tough choices. By introducing Clubcard Fuel Save, we can do our bit to make everyday life easier. We’re delighted to be rolling this out nationally.”
