Football fans heading to Brazil this summer are being urged to check their travel insurance cover before jetting off.

Comparison site comparethemarket.com says certain event and country-specific risks mean supporters could easily find themselves underinsured.

“The World Cup in Brazil has all the makings of an incredible event and it has certainly captured the imagination of football fans throughout the world,” said comparethemarket’s director of insurance Simon McCulloch.

“However, there are a number of specific risks for fans travelling from the UK that their travel insurance policies will not cover. We would urge them to be wary of these so they don’t fall foul of them.”

Below are five insurance traps fans should avoid:

• If the customer does not make it to a match due to a failure in public transport in Brazil then the cost of the tickets will not be covered under the travel insurance policy

• Connecting flights are often excluded from the Travel Delay section of the policy

• Given the high crime rates in parts of Brazil customers will also need to check that they have adequate cover for their mobile phones and tablet devices. Some policies may not provide enough cover for the cost of replacing mobile device/s. If this is the case then it would be recommended that the customer purchases additional cover for their mobiles/gadgets

• Supporters should be aware that they will usually not be covered for any medical claim where the treating doctor believes excessive alcohol consumption has actively contributed to illness or injury

• Some travel insurance providers warn that for England’s first game in the Amazonian city of Manaus, there is a known risk of mosquitoes that carry malaria and yellow fever. Many policies have an exclusion under this section stating that expenses incurred as a result of contracting a tropical disease will not be covered if you have not had the NHS recommended inoculations and/or taken the NHS recommended medication.
