Fathers consider it more important to teach their kids about how to manage their money than how to navigate relationships, according to new research.

A survey of 1,000 fathers by the Knowledge to Action Foundation found that two thirds chose ‘handling finances’ as the conversation most important to have with children to prepare them for adulthood. In contrast, just 33 per cent chose sex and 22 per cent chose relationships.

Staying healthy was the second most important conversation, selected by 40 per cent of fathers.

Less than 20 per cent of fathers through they should discuss how to build a career with their children, while a mere seven per cent thought it wise to talk with their children about how they might deal with exam failure.

Kelly Frazer of the Knowledge to Action Foundation said: “These results were pretty surprising, given that – if media scare stories are to be believed – the man on the street doesn’t have a particularly high level of financial acuity. We tend to think that parents are most worried about their kids getting in with the wrong crowd, failing exams and drinking – but seems that isn’t the case.

“Maybe many dads, having possibly felt the impact of the credit crunch first hand, are keen to ensure that their kids don’t go through what they have – which can only be a good thing.”
