One in ten Brits wrongly believes that the government will pick up the tab for their funeral, a survey has found.

According to research by perfectchoicefunerals.com the majority thought that funeral costs were an entitlement that came from paying taxes, while 33 per cent believing it was deducted from National Insurance. Some nine per cent said that they had just assumed that they wouldn’t have to cover the cost of a funeral themselves.

This was the eighth most common misconception about funerals. The top misconception, held by 32 per cent of Brits, was that the church and crematorium would handle the entire organisation of a funeral.

Emma Simpson of perfectchoicefunerals.com said: “When it comes to funerals, it is always a difficult time for those involved and although it would be nice if we didn’t have to make arrangements and pay for this day ourselves, this isn’t the case.

“What is important to remember is that as long as we bear in mind that it is something that will have to be thought of at some point, it does not need to add any more upset or stress. Preparing in a sensible yet practical mind-set can really help when the time comes.”

Other misconceptions included that only lilies can be given as condolence flowers (28 per cent) and that funerals can only happen on a Monday (25 per cent.).
