Men are far more likely than women to lie about expenditure and hide the evidence, according to a new survey.

Research by vouchercloud.com found that just 22 per cent of women have actively hidden or lied about their spending compared to 41 per cent of men. Half of men had been caught out compared to just 34 per cent of women.

Female respondents were more likely to downplay the price of purchases (73 per cent) and pretend new items were old (61 per cent) while men tended to hide the new purchases altogether (64 per cent) and destroy receipts (59 per cent). Most secret spenders hid their purchases to avoid arguments.

Nights out and fashion and beauty were the most common secret expenditures, while leisure activities, transport costs and holiday spending rounded out the top five.

Matthew Wood of vouchercloud.com said: “Obviously thereare going to be some things that we keep from our partners in terms of spending. The odd little treat, an extra item whilst out shopping or lunchtime indulgence, is something that we really don’t have to tell anyone. The important thing is to make sure that this doesn’t get out of hand or that, when it does, we ‘fess up sooner rather than later.”
