Research by Confused.com found that 24 per cent of Brits get out the credit cards when they’ve been drinking, bringing home everything from a pie maker to a folding ladder after boozy shopping sprees.

More than half of drunken purchases are made on Amazon, while 50 per cent of drunk shoppers take advantage of Dutch courage to bid on Ebay. Clothes are the most frequently purcahses, along with DVDs and CDs.

One in five Brits has purchased new shoes, while 18 per cent have booked a holiday. The same percentage have sprung for concert tickets. More unique purcahses include a set of ten lobster pots, diving equipment, a pie maker and a folding ladder. One unfortunate Brit even bought a washing machine.

On average the most Brits have spent on an alcohol-fuelled shopping spree was £149, though four per cent have dropped upwards of £500.

Nerys Lewis, head of credit cards at Confused.com, said: “Alcohol can cause people’s inhibitions to disappear, but people need to be aware of how their credit card spending when drunk could affect them in the long run. Whilst people may wake up the next day and have a good laugh about the purchase they’ve made when drunk, these purchases could cause problems further down the line.”
