Money remains a source of tension in many households with 38 per cent of people admitting to falling out with their partner over their spending habits, according to a survey by reward site Quidco.

A guilty 12 per cent reveal their partners think they should spend less. The belief that their partner spends too much fuels a quarter (25 per cent) of couples to argue. Nearly one in ten say they are forced to bail out their partner each month, while a further 17 per cent refuse to offer support.

Andy Oldham, MD of cashback and rewards site Quidco, said: “How you spend the money you earn is ultimately your choice, but if you do find yourself sneaking a pair of shoes or the latest game into the house because you are feeling guilty about treating yourself, it might be partly because it’s an impulse purchase that deep down you know you don’t really need.

“One way to counteract buyers’ remorse is to take the time to research those little must-have treats that you do actually want – like a new perfume, a shirt for your next night out or the latest PS4 title….Thoughtful buying is the new impulse buying for savvy shoppers.”
