Banks and building societies accounted for 66 per cent of complaints to the Financial Conduct Authority in the first half of 2014.

Barclays triggered 278,426 complaints, making it the most complained-about firm despite a decrease of 10 per cent in the number of complaints. The Bank of Scotland came in second, with an increase of 46 per cent since the second half of 2013

Lloyds Bank, National Westminster Bank and Santander rounded out the top five.

The total number of complaints made fell five per cent.

The FCA’s director of policy, risk and research, Christopher Woolard, said: “It’s important that firms now get on top of the issues that are driving complaints. Although it’s encouraging to see the total number of complaints fall, there is clearly further work to be done to ensure that consumer interests come first.”

While complaints relating to payment protection insurance (PPI) were down 11 per cent compared to the previous six months it was still the most complained about product. PPI accounted for 52 per cent of all complaints.

Current accounts, general insurance, credit cards and savings also attracted high numbers of complaints.
