Ed Miliband has come under attack for his party’s proposals for a Mansion Tax from an unexpected quarter.

Singer Myleene Klass took the Labour Party leader to task as he appeared on TV’s The Agenda this morning, surprising him as she criticised his plans for a tax on properties worth more than £2m.

Klass said the levy would hit “little grannies” living modestly in London rather than the super-wealthy.

She attacked that concept of a “Mansion Tax” claiming it unfairly conjured images of large houses when, she said: “In London, which is where 80% of the people who are going to be paying this tax actually live, the south-east of England, have you seen what that amount of money can get you? Often it’s like a garage”.

“When you do look at the people who will be suffering this tax, it’s true a lot of them are grannies who have had these houses in their families for a long, long time.”

She added that the wealthy would have accounting methods around the tax, adding:”It’s going to be the little grannies who have lived in those houses for years and years.”

Fellow guest, former ambassador Sir Christopher Meyer, told Miliband: “You’re going to screw me royally.”

Miliband, who recovered from an initial surprise said: “I say bring on this debate. I think it is a principled view that those with the broadest shoulders should pay the biggest burden. I think that is a decent, right principle and that is not happening under this government.”

Meanwhile estate agents Savills claimed the mansion tax was already depressing sales in London.

But later today, in a growing Twitter storm against Klass, comments such as “I haven’t heard much from Mylene Klass in suport of the poor who can’t afford the bedroom tax.” and “Myleene Klass is moaning about £3000 tax a year. She earns roughly 2m a year and it would stay that way under a Mansion Tax.”

A Just Giving page has also been set up reading: “Help Myleene Klass pay her Mansion Tax. Myleene is a struggling mother with a fortune of £11m who needs our help. Please be generous.”
