Amazon Prime Day is 48 hours long this year, and promises Prime members discounts on thousands of products across all departments.

Shoppers need to be a member of Amazon Prime to take part. If you’ve not been a member before, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial to take advantage of the sale.

Some products have already been discounted for Prime members. For example, you can buy an Eero home wifi system for £149.40, down from £249, or a Ring spotlight cam for £139, down from £199.

Here are some tips from Uswitch.com for getting the best bargains on the day.

Plan ahead

Catherine Hiley, tech and deals expert at Uswitch, says: “Amazon Prime Day is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of big discounts to Amazon’s flagship technology, including its streaming sticks, Echo and Kindle devices.

“If you’ve been looking to get your hands on this tech, now could be your chance.”

Know your budget

Hiley suggests setting yourself a spending limit.

Otherwise impulse-buying without strict spending rules will likely result in purchasing items you don’t need, ending up with a pile of items you don’t want.

​Know your rights

The Consumer Rights Act says goods should be of satisfactory quality, fit to do the job intended, and last a reasonable length of time.

“This right is limited to 30 days from the date you buy your product,” says Hiley, “If you’re unhappy with the item, it’s worth knowing what the return policy is in advance.”

​Do your research

Make sure you check the reviews of any product you plan to buy, as it’s easy to be swayed by clever advertising.

“If you’re planning to purchase more expensive items, such as smartphones or laptops, look for deals on comparison sites,” suggests Hiley.
