Customers who believe they were mis-sold PPI by Santander can still make a complaint.

Santander has extended its deadline for submitting PPI claims after its website crashed on deadline day yesterday.

A message on the bank’s website says: “The deadline for submitting PPI complaints and claims is 29 August 2019. However, due to the high volume of customers contacting us about PPI you can continue to make a PPI complaint or to submit PPI enquiries using the details below.”

Santander has yet to confirm when the deadline will be extended to, so anyone wishing to make a claim should act quickly.

Banks and other lenders sold about 45 million PPI policies between 1990 and 2010, typically selling the insurance alongside loans, mortgages and credit cards. So if you took out any of those products during that two-decade window, you may have been mis-sold PPI.

People had until 23.59 on 29 August to register a complaint about the way PPI was sold with the bank or provider concerned. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has been urging people to act before the deadline.

Santander was one of a number of banks struggling to cope with a rush of last minute PPI claims, with websites crashing at a number of providers, and customers unable to get through on the phone. Issues were also reported at Natwest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and Co-op Bank.

The FCA said it had no plans to extend the 29 August deadline but it expected firms to treat customers fairly if they may have had trouble accessing their services.
