One in 15 (6.6 per cent) online purchases are made between midnight and 6am, according to the John Lewis Partnership card.

Women are twice as likely as men to shop at night, with night-time searches for headphones and sofa beds suggesting people plan to escape snoring partners.

However, men who shop at night spend slightly more than their female counterparts. On average, men spend £37 compared to £34 for women.

According to John Lewis, people who shop at night spend the most money on holidays, followed by general retailers and supermarkets. Shoppers buying flights or holiday accommodation in the middle of the night spend an average of £529.

The 10 most popular night-time searches on Johnlewis.com are:

  1. Duvet covers
  2. Televisions
  3. Laptops
  4. Mobile phones
  5. Fridge freezers
  6. Headphones
  7. Sofas/Sofa beds
  8. Wallpaper
  9. Beds
  10. Cameras

Mike Jackson, partner and director of financial services at John Lewis & Partners, said: “Our research suggests shopping is now a 24-hour activity. More customers are shopping on their smartphones and tablet computers and it would appear many are using this technology to shop from the comfort of their own beds.”
