According to research from Which?, football fans could pay up to £725 to watch their team this season. If you’ve already missed some games but simply can’t justify splashing out to watch the rest, there are ways to catch the action for free.

The campaign group lists the following ways for footy fans:

Free Premier League official app (iOS and Android)

Once you’ve selected the team you want to support, you’ll receive the latest headlines on transfer rumours and pre-match news, as well as information on upcoming fixtures, picture galleries, video interviews and an overview of the table.

Free ESPN app (iOS and Android)

Which? said the ESPN app is a good option if you just want a quick way to check scores and nothing else. Notifications include match start, goals, final whistle, cards and substitutes, depending on what you select. You’ll have to pick your favourite leagues (Europa League and Champions League are included), but you can track other sports too, such as F1, cricket, rugby and golf.

Free Onefootball app ( iOS and Android)

This is one of the best and most comprehensive alternative football apps, according to Which?. Pick your favourite team(s) and league(s) and you can view live commentary of games, get customisable push notifications for events such as team announcements and goals, read news, player profiles and more.

Club apps (iOS, Android)

Most of the clubs in the Premier League have their own mobile apps which can be handy if you just want to concentrate on your team.

Smart home hub

If you have a smart home hub (or a smartphone with AI assistants installed) but don’t have a game streaming on your TV, you can ask the AI helper what the score is, such as ‘Alexa, who won the [team or event] game?’. Otherwise Which? said the Alexa Sports Update tool has more detailed responses. To set it up, open the Alexa app on your smartphone and add your team to the Sports Update page. Ask your smart hub “what’s my Sports Update?” for details on the latest scores and upcoming games.

Wearable apps

Whether you have an Android Wear watch or an Apple Watch, football apps can give you updates at a glance. The free Forza Football for Apple Watch shows you live scores on match day, and you can set custom alerts for the teams you’re interested in. You can also view pre-match line-ups, formations and player photos and you can vote on user polls to have your say on the squad and the manager.

The free FotMob app for Android gives live scores, match stats, text commentary and TV schedules.

Listen on the radio

Listening to football on the radio could still be your best option, particularly when you’re driving. Catch the games here:

You could also download a digital radio app to your smartphone, such as the free TuneIn Radio (iOS and Android) which has over 100,000 stations, including AM/FM stations, and it can handle podcasts. Alternatively, FM Radio (Android) or Simple Radio (iOS) are more basic FM/AM radio station tuners, Which? said, and there are plenty more to choose from in the app stores.
