With the UK experiencing the hottest temperatures since the summer of 1976, many were forced to keep their cool by plugging in air conditioning units and fans.

Research from comparison site Compare the Market found that an average air conditioning unit could use up around 21,600 watts if used round the clock, adding £300 to bills.

For those limiting use to eight hours a day, they would typically spend £1.03 on average a day, equating to £95 over the months of May, June and July.

Those using the units for 18 hours a day could see costs rise to £2.32 a day, adding just under £214 to bills over the three months.

Peter Earl, head of energy at Compare the Market, said: “As a nation unaccustomed to excessive heat, many families have turned to household air conditioning systems to stay cool. However, these systems can be both expensive to run and often require a hefty upfront payment.

“The monthly cost of air conditioning can come as a real shock to families who are only used to paying costly energy bills throughout the winter months to stay warm.”

Earl added that with further hot weather predicted over the coming weeks, billpayers should look to review their energy provider to ensure they’re not already paying over the odds for electricity.

“This could be especially beneficial to those households who have remained with the same provider for some time,” he added.
