Almost 50 per cent of Which? members haggled with their car insurance provider at renewal, the consumer group found, for an average savings of £75.

Admiral offered the biggest discounts between the price quoted at renewal and the final premium paid at 14.4 per cent. Saga customers saved an average of 7.9 per cent.

Customers at Aviva, Direct line and LV saw smaller reductions. Which? said: “This may be because both Direct Line and LV initially quoted average prices under £300, suggesting there’s not much room for further reductions.”

While negotiations were common, only three in ten customers went one step further and switched providers in pursuit of the best deal, a course of action that saved them an average of £131.
