The value of your vehicle and its group rating are two factors that influence the cost of your insurance.

Car insurance for young drivers doesn’t come cheap because, statistically, 17-year-olds are more likely to have an accident than older motorists.

But there are ways for newbie drivers to cut their insurance costs. One way is to have a telematics policy, which involves having a black box installed in your car or downloading an app to your phone. These monitor how well you drive, with safer drivers getting cheaper cover.

Another way to reduce your insurance bill is to carefully consider your choice of car.

“The cost of car insurance is based on a number of things including the value of the vehicle itself and its group rating. The lower the group rating, the cheaper insurance will usually be,” said Clare Egan, head of motor product at Admiral.

The experts at Admiral have delved into their data and found the 10 cheapest cars to insure for 17-year-olds in the UK.

The Toyota Aygo, Fiat 500 and Volkswagen Up! take the top three spots, with the average annual premium costing £641, £682 and £697 respectively.

The Citroen C1, Renault Clio and Vauxhall Corsa also make the top ten.
