School kids take £1.5bn worth of uninsured gadgets to school
British children take £1.5bn worth of uninsured high-tech equipment to school with them each day.
According to research by insurer, SquareTrade, a third of school-going children take expensive, high-tech gadgets like tablets and e-readers into school but 50% fail to get the right cover.
In recent years there has been a rise in tablet use across schools in the UK.
Last month it was revealed that an estimated 8 out of 10 parents were planning to purchase consumer electronics for their children for Christmas, while increasing numbers of schools are actively encouraging the use of tablets and e-readers, the research said.
However, the average cost of a tablet is around £200/£300 and the research found that one in four parents report that their child has broken an electronic device, causing them to pay out to get it fixed or replaced, adding to the cost of the gadgets.
Kevin Gillan of SquareTrade said: “50% of the devices children are bringing to school are uninsured, which means a lot of parents are going to be forking out a fortune on repairs and replacements. Paying out can be easily avoided, as long as you have a good warranty in place.”
It is recommended that parents get accidental cover as this is the most widely claimed reason for claims.
