In the run up to the festive season, The Royal Mint has issued a new commemorative 50p coin featuring The Snowman.

This is the second year in a row The Snowman has featured on The Royal Mint’s official Christmas coin.

It features the star of the children’s classic, James, standing with the Snowman as they prepare to fly off to the North Pole.

The coin was designed by award-winning animator and illustrator Robin Shaw, who was assistant director of The Snowman and The Snowdog, the sequel to the original animated adaptation of the book.

The coin will not be entering general circulation but can be bought directly from The Royal Mint website.

There are three versions to choose from. There are unlimited numbers of the brilliant uncirculated coin, which cost £10. Then there are 25,000 silver proof coins, costing £65, and 600 gold proof coins at £980 each.

It’s hard to say how much these coins will be worth, but a previous coin featuring Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbi reportedly sold on eBay for more than £800.

Nicola Howell, director of consumer at The Royal Mint, said: “Following the fantastic response to The Snowman’s debut appearance on a 50p coin to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Raymond Briggs’ classic tale in 2018, we are delighted to introduce the second coin in the series capturing James and The Snowman’s friendship.

“Over the past few years, the Beatrix Potter, Gruffalo and Paddington collections have been extremely popular, and we believe the second Snowman coin will be equally as successful.”
