The high-profile demise of star manager Neil Woodford has left many people nervous about investing in funds. But are they right to be concerned?

Last year was dominated by the downfall of Neil Woodford, who was once considered the star of the investment world.

The suspension of his flagship Equity Income fund in June, which left thousands of people without access to their savings, culminated in the fund being closed down by its administrators and investors shouldering painful losses.

Because Woodford was as close to a household name as they come in investment, his demise has left many people concerned about handing their money over to a fund manager.

If this could happen to a so-called star, what’s to say it won’t happen again?
