Barclays brings home the bacon with bigger profits

Barclays is the latest bank to announce big half-year profits, which rose 12% to £4.1bn with a big contribution made by its investment bank. Retail banking profit grew 9% to £651m, despite refunding £87m to customers overcharged on fees. “Our ambition is to be one of the handful of banks leading the global financial services industry,” said chief executive John Varley.
