‘Free’ up to £50 with local shop spend

American Express cardholders will be able to earn up to £50 cashback at participating local retailers this summer as shops begin to open their doors after being closed for months amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Amex cardholders who spends £10 or more in a single transaction in-store at a participating ‘Shop Small’ retailer will receive a £5 statement credit.

The promotion kicks off from Monday 22 June and will run for 12 weeks until 13 September 2020.

In order to get the offer, shoppers need to register their American Express card by clicking on the ‘save offer to card tab’ once the deal goes live.

Cardmembers can save the offer to their card via the Amex Mobile App from 15 June 2020.

Amex said following the Covid-19 lockdown and the effect this has had on small businesses, “it is more important than ever to support them”.

Cardmembers can use the deal a maximum of 10 times (once per participating shop) earning up to £50 cashback. For the last six years, the offer’s been unlimited, allowing card members to earn as much cashback per qualifying spend but last year, Amex brought in a 10 time cap.

See the shop small map link to find out which stores are participating in your local area. The statement credit should be applied within five days.

The offer excludes online transactions, pre-paid cards and buy now pay later purchases.

Credit should appear on card account statements within five days from the date of the qualifying purchase but may take up to 90 days from the offer end date.
