We reveal the destinations where your weak pound will go further.

There hasn’t been a lot of good news for holidaymakers lately with the pound remaining weak against a number of major currencies including the euro and US dollar.

The big question, of course, is will it fall further?

Unfortunately for travellers, no one can really answer this. However people nervous about the volatile currency may be able to remove some uncertainty by booking holidays to destinations where they can get more for their pound.

The no brainer is to stay far away from the US and Europe. The pound fell below $1.50 last week, sending thousands frantically scurrying towards locking in foreign currencies to hedge against further shocks.

The table below reveals the best exotic destinations to head to get a fab holiday on a better pound exchange rate, with South Africa, Indonesia and Egypt currently topping the list.

If it has to be Europe… head to recession hit countries in Europe. As much as the pound is struggling, many vendors will be willing to slash their prices because they too are struggling. After all, a hotel room filled at 30% of the normal price is better than the room being empty and no money coming in. There are bargains to be found, especailly in Greece and Spain.

Other top tips on how to buy and where to spend…

• Avoid using credit and debit cards as they tend not to offer the best value. Some cards charge 2.5% or more for an ATM transaction and the exchange rates may not be favourable. This can quickly eat into your holiday spending money. If you have to use a credit or debit card at an ATM, plan to withdraw enough for a few days so that you’re not racking up lots of fees on ATM withdrawals.

• If you want to lock in the current exchange rate to have some budgeting certainty, consider getting a prepaid card. However, it’s important to shop around carefully, as most prepaid cards have charges that apply for their use and savings made on the rate of exchange could be lost through unexpected fees. One such exception is the ICE Travellers Cashcard.

• Shop around for the best deals to make the most of the weak pound. Buy cash in advance online or on the high street, rather than paying less competitive rates at airports. Remember small variances can add up if you’re changing hundreds of pounds. Check through comparison sites to find the best deals and also options like buy-back at the same rate as you bought. This could protect you against any further falls in sterling.

• If you tend to leave ordering holiday money until the last minute, check around for good deals at branches.

Tom Johnson, head of currency exchange at ICE’s Online Business, said:

“The highs of 1.26 euros to the pound last summer now seem like a distant memory. We’ve seen a massive uptake in people locking in rates using the ICE Travellers Cashcard, hedging their bets on the value of the pound falling further against these popular currencies.

“It also pays to shop around online for the best exchange rates. Look for reputable providers with good rates and free delivery. It’s also worth checking out recommendations by consumer champion Which? If you’re travelling to more exotic climes you’ll find exchange rates vary more widely from provider to provider, so a little extra time scouring the internet for competitive deals could go a long way to putting more spending money in your pocket for that longed for holiday.”
