Lower earners would need to be on a salary of £63,000 to consider themselves wealthy, according to a new study.

The research, carried out by www.vouchercloud.com, shows people who earn less than £25,000 a year believe that wealth is achieved when a salary hits £63,000, while people who currently earn £50,000 or more believe your personal income needs to be £124,000 to be considered wealthy.

Within the lower income bracket, 64% of respondents said they never see themselves earning that amount, compared to only 31% in the higher bracket.

Some 78% of people surveyed from the higher bracket said they were ambitious when it came to their career compared to only 51% of the lower income bracket

More than half of higher earners (54%) said they use earnings to measure success while in the lower bracket, the results were much lower, with only 39% believing success could be measured by income.

Matthew Wood of vouchercloud said: “The results of the study certainly demonstrate that wealth is relative, and is by no means judged against the same milestones by everyone. What may seem like a large amount to one person, seems a lot smaller to someone else. It’s probably part of human nature to want to ‘improve’ so to speak. If you have a nice car, you’d probably like a nicer one. If you have a big house, you’d probably like a bigger one. It’s a lucky few that are happy with their lot.”
