Endemol, the Dutch television production company responsible for hit show Big Brother, has recorded a 23% rise in half-year turnover to £354m (517m euros) in the first six months of the year.

The company, majority-owned by Spanish communications giant Telefonica, also saw its net profit improve by 20%, although it is still believed to be contemplating a sale of its share in the operation.

“This shows the effect a hit TV show has on the bottom line of a production company,” said media analyst Debra Smith. “However, Endemol has to be very careful not to over-depend on one product as any shift in popularity will leave it exposed on the revenue side.

“Personally, I don’t like the show but shareholders will definitely like the numbers reported here.”
