One in four adults in the UK have been a victim of robbery in a public place in the last five years, research from Halifax Home Insurance shows.

The home insurance provider claims more than 10 million Brits have had their personal possessions stolen from them in public.

The most popular item targeted by theives was a mobile phone, a crime reported by 44% of victims, followed by wallets and jewellery.

While more than one million victims said they had been subjected to physical or verbal intimidation, a quarter were pick-pocked and completely oblivious to the crime until well after the event.

Halifax Home Insurance spokesperson Vicky Emmott said: “Householders can protect themselves against the financial cost of theft by ensuring they have adequate home insurance cover that protects them for the less or theft of items when outside the home.”
