Edinburgh is the best place to invest in property in Scotland, research from Bank of Scotland has shown.

Properties in Edinburgh have seen the largest gain in prices per square metre over the past 10 years, according to an analysis of Scottish cities by the lender.

Prices in the capital have experienced a 173% increase since 1996 and now properties cost, on average, £2,218 per square metre.

Martin Ellis, chief economist at Bank of Scotland, said that, 10 years ago, properties in Edinburgh cost just £811.

Edinburgh is the only Scottish city to feature in the top 10 list of the UK’s most expensive cities.
