The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has said that it is to install 300 free cash machines in some of the poorest parts of the country, making them accessible to the lower paid and those on benefits.

The move comes in the wake of a warning by Citizens Advice that many poorer parts of the UK are fast becoming “cash deserts” as banks close more branches. Many customers have had to depend on a growing number of fee-charging machines to withdraw cash.

“This is a good move by RBS and genuinely helps those who are financially disadvantaged,” said financial adviser Martin Cunningham.

“Charging for cash withdrawals is a contentious issue, but charging the poor for the service is indefensible.”
