VAT will ‘most probably’ be cut on contraceptives in Gordon Brown’s Budget to be unveiled later in the month. High street store Superdrug has already slashed prices in anticipation of a move from the current 17.5% rate to 5%.

Superdrug took a lot of credit for the move, and said that its long-running campaign to reduce the price of contraceptives to help bring down teenage pregnancy rates had paid off.

“This idea was really seeded some while ago and has now almost been delivered as a fully-fledged policy,” said retail analyst Debbie Harrison.

“I’m not sure who’s baby it originally was, but there is fertile territory for the Chancellor to explore here.”
