Good drivers are being rewarded with lower premiums as a new-look telematics app offers discounts on car insurance premiums.

The MotorMate app from Confused.com is designed to allow people to find out how good a driver they are.

The app mirrors in-car telematics technology, which is where a black box is fitted to a car to monitor driving performance, potentially allowing good drivers to benefit from cheaper car insurance premiums.

MotorMate monitors driving behaviour every second by using GPS data, ensuring the driver gets the an accurate evaluation of their driving behaviour.

The app takes into account factors such as anticipation, pace, acceleration, braking and cornering and gives a more thorough understanding of the driver’s behaviour.

This allows drivers to be monitored as individuals and not categorised based on assumptions made around their profession or age.

The person’s driving behaviour is plotted against a road map, illustrating a real-world driving environment and showing how the motorist can adapt to their surroundings.

By plotting a driver’s journey against a map it allows the user to see their journeys and identifies areas and situations where they need to improve their driving style.

The journey markers highlight excessive acceleration or low anticipation to help the driver see the location of these events.

Joanna Garcia, head of emerging products at Confused.com, said: “The emergence of new technologies such as telematics means motorists who can prove that they are careful behind the wheel can afford themselves discounts on their insurance premiums, regardless of their profession, age.

“Motorists can try the telematics experience before having to commit to having a black box installed in the vehicle by using an app such as MotorMate by Confused.com.

“This approach allows motorists to overcome obstacles that may have categorised them into certain driving stereotypes.”

Discounts will depend on the individual’s score after 250 miles have been clocked up and how much their premium costs.

The insurers who are participating alongside Confused.com are Admiral, Elephant, Diamond, Quotemehappy, and General Accident.
