Amex card holders: Earn up to £25 back with Shop Small

Written by:
The American Express Shop Small offer is back for December, allowing cardholders to earn up to £25 back in statement credit when spending at local businesses.

Amex cardholders who spend £15 or more in a single transaction in-store at a participating Shop Small retailer will receive £5 statement credit.

The promotion, now in it’s tenth year, encourages people to shop at small, local and independent retailers and runs from Saturday 3 to Monday 12 December 2022. This also ties in with Small Business Saturday on 3 December.

To get the deal, you’ll need to register for the Shop Small offer – you can do this from today – through the Amex app or via your online account.

You can use the deal a maximum of five times (but just once per participating shop), earning up to £25 back on an up to £75 spend.

It’s an in-store offer so won’t apply for any online spends. Other details you need to know about include:

  • Buy now pay later purchases are excluded
  • Excludes purchases made by additional cardholders, but they can also enrol by saving the offer to their card to get the deal
  • Nearer the end of the Shop Small scheme, check when the business will charge your card as Amex confirmed qualifying purchases must be billed to your card account by the end date. If you don’t get charged before the end date, you won’t get the statement credit
  • Statement credit should appear on the card account within 30 days from the date of the qualifying purchase, but can take up to 90 days after 12 December.

‘Support local business’

Nikki Edelman, vice president at American Express, said: “Supporting local, independent businesses is even more important today than it was when American Express founded Shop Small and Small Business Saturday.

“Our research reveals that UK consumers recognise this importance with almost three quarters of adults set on shopping locally this season. As we mark ten years since the launch of the first UK Shop Small campaign, this season’s offer enables cardmembers to support their local businesses at this vital time and earn themselves valuable cashback on their festive purchases and everyday shopping.”

For the first six years of Shop Small, the offer was unlimited, allowing card holders to earn as much cashback per qualifying spend but in 2019, Amex brought in a 10-time cap and in June 2022, it was scaled back to five qualifying purchases.

In previous years, it also ran for longer and had a lower minimum spend at £10.
