Over a third of UK couples are spiralling into debt as a result of ‘diva demands’ from their other half, with both genders turning to the plastic to foot the bill.

According to a new report, entertaining the demands of partners with luxury holidays, fine dining and designer labels is setting British boyfriends a whopping £1,632 a year.

But it seems the problem also extends the other way, with increasing numbers of women being pushed into debt from the same ‘diva demands’ from their boyfriends.

Despite the stereotypes that it is only women who are financially demanding, it seems men are also racking up costs for women.

The rise of the ‘metrosexual’ is leading to a wave of high-maintenance men in modern couples. So much so, it sees women across the country splash out £84 each month on ‘man maintenance’.

The report cashback site Quidco revealed that this ‘man maintenance’ is costing women a staggering £1,008 a year.

According to the report, 32%of women have found themselves in debt by entertaining high maintenance partners, with almost 40% of UK men in the red, as a result.

Worryingly, both genders turn to the credit card to foot the bill when the income fails to keep up.

Andy Oldham, managing director at Quidco, said: “All couples like to spoil each other and make one another happy, but splashing out on expensive treats in a continually challenging financial climate can be dangerous for cash-strapped Casanovas.”

Seven in ten adults are losing sleep over how to keep up with the financial strains of indulging in their partner’s diva demands.
