47 fixed energy tariffs end this month – is your bill set to soar?

Thousands of households risk seeing their energy bills skyrocket as a flurry of fixed tariffs come to an end on 31 January.

A total of 47 fixed price energy deals from 13 suppliers end this month, according to uSwitch.

The average bill will rise by £114, but some customers could end up paying as much as £190 more.

Customers who don’t switch when their tariff ends will automatically be rolled onto a more expensive standard variable tariff (SVT).

Although the energy cap introduced by the government last year has brought down the cost of SVTs, they are still hundreds of pounds more expensive than the best fixed deals on the market.

Cordelia Samson, energy expert at uSwitch, said now is the time to take action.

“In the past six months we’ve seen the lowest-priced deals becoming even cheaper. Households can take advantage of more than 50 fixed deals available for less than £1,000 per year and switch now.”

She added: “If you switch to a fixed deal this time, make sure you also sign up for a reminder to alert you when the plan is next due to expire – to keep you firmly in control of who you give your hard-earned money to.”
