Prices at airport car parks have rocketed in the last year. At some, you could end up paying well over 200% more than at the same time in 2022.

New research from personal insolvency provider Creditfix has revealed the huge increase in airport parking fees facing holidaymakers this year.

The firm analysed parking costs at all UK airports for a standard two-week stay in June this year and revealed an average annual increase of £79.50 for two weeks’ parking – a rise of 88%.

Gatwick prices off the runway

Gatwick had the biggest increase with costs rising from £93 to £335 in a year. This represented a 260% increase. London’s second airport was followed by Leeds Bradford, which saw a 215% uplift, with prices hiked from £68 to £214.

In third place in the hall of parking shame was Birmingham, where prices went up 200% from £58.49 to £175.43.

Offsite parking comparison

In order to give an indiction of savings that could be made by parking near rather than at the airport, YourMoney.com ran a similar scenario for offsite parking at the three airports with the largest increases.

Running a search on Airparks.co.uk for a two-week stay between 12 and 26 June, we found that the cheapest price for parking at Gatwick was £149 (down £186 on the quoted airport price); Birmingham was £126 (a £49 saving), and Leeds Bradford was £93 – a saving of £121.

‘An extra burden on budgets’

The increased costs come at a time when families are spending up to 30% more on package holidays than they did last year, according to consumer group Which?.

Layla Johnson, regional manager at Creditfix, said: “While many families look forward to summer holidays, for many parents it puts an extra burden on budgets.

“The rising cost of airport parking is a significant expenditure – and that’s after you’ve had to pay for the flights and accommodation. For those lucky enough to have holidays booked this summer, don’t let these additional costs catch you by surprise.”

YourMoney.com approached the three airports with the largest increases for comment.

A Birmingham Airport spokesperson said: “Birmingham Airport in partnership with NCP, who manage our car parks, regularly review and benchmark with alternative providers.

“We offer a wide range of on-site parking options varying in price and type of product e.g. surface parking, multi storey and valet which suit the needs of our customers. For the best possible choice of product, and the best rates, customers are advised to book early. Prices and availability will always vary by season and capacity available.

Both Gatwick and Leeds Bradford had not responded at the time of going to press.
