Thousands of bus fares across England are being capped at £2 between January and March.

The £60m “Get Around for £2” scheme, has been launched by the government to help with the rising cost of living.

It will see adult single fares capped at £2 on the routes included and over 100 bus providers are taking part in the scheme.

The average cost of a single bus fare across England is £2.80 but in some areas it’s as high as £5.

It only applies in England but does not include bus journeys in London. It also doesn’t apply in Manchester, Liverpool, or West Yorkshire where separate schemes operate.

Along with helping people to save money, the scheme is hoping to persuade more people to choose the bus over driving.

It’s expected to cut emissions and congestion and the government said it could see two million fewer cars on the road.

“Fares are just one way to make buses more attractive”

The Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) said a complete package is needed to make bus travel more attractive.

Graham Vidler, the CPT’s chief executive officer, said: “We look forward to welcoming more customers on board when the £2 fare cap in England starts in January, as it complements great value fares already in place that make taking the bus more attractive and environmentally friendly this winter.

“Travelling for £2 on the bus both helps customers facing rising cost challenges and try a new travel option to get to work, education, public services, leisure or see loved ones.

“Fares are just one way to make buses more attractive. We also need a focus on a package of bus priority measures which reduce congestion, speed up journey times, keep fares low and ensure buses are reliable – factors we know are important for passengers.”
