Thomas Cook customers will be able to pre-book their sunbed for €25 which could mean towel wars become a thing of the past.

The ‘Choose your favourite sunbed’ option costs €25 (£22) per sunbed per stay and allows families and couples to pre-book a lounger in their preferred location.

Six days before the holiday, Thomas Cook will email customers asking if they would like to choose a sunbed, and if so, they will be given a plan, showing sun, shade and pool spots.

The scheme is being trialled in three Thomas Cook own-brand hotels from the end of February – in Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. It will then be made available in 30 own-brand hotels for the summer.

However, only between 10% and 20% of the sunbeds will be designated for the scheme.

Thomas Cook said this is the first service of its kind to be offered by a package holiday company. Chris Mottershead, Thomas Cook’s UK managing director, said: “Traditional package holidays are a thing of the past. Holidaymakers today want to personalise their package, mixing and matching the elements that best fit their needs and lifestyle.

“Our recently launched services such as Choose Your Roomwhich has attracted more than 10,000 bookings during the trial phase, and Early Check Inare proving popular and we’re excited about the opportunity with Choose your Favourite Sunbed, particularly among families who want to secure a number of beds together in a specific spot.”
