This weekend, Ikea customers are invited to take part in a brand new ‘car boot sale’. in an event being hosted by a major furniture chain at two of its UK stores.

Ikea is testing out the concept at its Milton Keynes and Cardiff stores this Saturday (2 September) and Sunday (3 Spetember), with each event set to run from 9am until 12pm. If the pilot car boot sales are successful, then the vision is that they take place in Ikea car parks across the country next year.

Second-hand home furnishing goods can be sold, but items such as clothing, electronics and food will not be accepted on any “stall”.

Those who wish to request a space to se sell items from furniture to toys can do so by emailing ikeacarboot@outlook.com. Potential sellers should note that they must receive a confirmation from Ikea in advance of the event, and they must be 18 or over to be vendors.

Climate positive ambition

The motivation for the event stems from Ikea’s ambitions to be climate positive by 2030. To be climate positive goes further than reaching a carbon net zero emissions target, by taking action that reduces the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

As environmental awareness is shaping the way that people value the things that they own, the car boot sale has been created to provide a fun and easy way to pass on items that still have some worth. Also it’s a way that shoppers can pick up bargains in challenging economic times.

Ikea circular hub

In 2021, Ikea introduced a circular hub as part of its commitment to becoming climate positive. The hub is an area within each store where, together with customers, Ikea can recycle and give products a new life.

This is by offering free spare parts and an attractive range of affordable goods including discontinued items, ex-display articles and pre-loved furniture, which can be traded back to Ikea through its BuyBack service.

In return, customers who sell back eligible products will receive store credit. Eventually, the sold-on pieces can be repurchased by another customer.

Ikea “excited” to be hosting event

David Manser, store manager, Ikea Milton Keynes said: “We’re excited to be hosting the first event of its kind for Ikea and are proud to be getting the local community together to sell, buy, explore and keep good things going.

“We want to make the passing on of pre-loved items as easy and enjoyable as possible, and by providing the opportunity for people to resell the items they no longer need, brings benefits to the community, the environment and wallets.

“If you have recently had a clear out, are looking to refresh your home, or are simply looking for something fun to do, why not come along this weekend and play your part in the sustainable loop.”
